POEM 1 ~ COMPOSED IN A GROUP DURING THE POETRY SLAM COACHING CLINIC

Paragraph 1- Esther
Paragraph 2- Jasmine
Paragraph 3- Jia Yin
Paragraph 4- Jocelyn
Paragraph 5- Jing Wen

I woke up at 5am
before the day break
365 days,
a non-stop routine
Have a wash up
and two pieces of plain bread for breakfast
Though I know that two pieces of bread cannot last long

I had to hurry to set up my stall
in the middle of the hawker centre
Collect the freshest ingredients
before it is all being wiped out
I work for 14 hours a day
Only having 30 minutes of break

I’m always the one working hard at the back
People at the front will never know how hard I work
Although I always had a smile on my face
I was actually sad on the inside
I got fed up at every little mistake I make
And blamed my partner if anything goes wrong

I had once thought of giving up
But after many thoughts of it
I decided to erase the thought off my mind
I keep thinking why I need to work so hard
I needed to keep my family going

It is a very tiring job
Everytime I reach home
I would sit on the chair
Wondering why I am here,
working as a chef in the hawker centre
And not in the restaurant
I regretted for not studying hard
when I was a teenager.

POEM 2 ~ COMPOSED INDIVIDUALLY DURING THE POETRY SLAM COACHING CLINIC

Poetry Slam Workshop Character: Hawker Chef

Everyday I wake up at 5 am,
Early in the morning.
Rushing to brush my teeth and eat breakfast,
I don’t have enough time.

Catching a bus to Boon Lay,
To set up my stall.
It was around 8 am,
When customers start coming in.
Busy whipping up meals for my customers,
I don’t have enough time for my own meals.

After one customer leaves comes another,
It’s never ending.
Sick and tired of cooking everyday,
What can I do?
I need to support my family.

My son is in secondary school,
And is having tuition for 3 subjects.
My wife has high blood pressure and diabetics,
She needs to see a doctor regularly.
Seeing all the difficulties if I quit,
I guessed I have to resign to my fate.

POEM 3 ~ COMPOSED INDIVIDUALLY BASED ON A STORY OF MY CHOICE

Story: The Chosen One
Title: An happy ending

Mary is an old lady,
who wears black long-sleeved cotton blouses and loose pants,
and sell bottles of sweets and packets of dried ginger and plum.
Whenever her sweets and small biscuits go soft,
she shed tears and dream of the little coins that would fill up her her large pocket in her blouse.

She offers prayers for Kuan Yin, the Most Merciful Goddess,
and prays for her to take her away to Heaven to live with her forever,
as it seems death was the most desirable way out of her misery.
Her prayers were answered,
when Kuan Yin visited her in her dreams.

Kuan Yin tells Mary that her prayer is heard for the fact that she is a pure soul.
She would take her away to heaven seven days later,
and said that she would make her one of her fourteen handmaidens in heaven.
Mary awoke with tears of joy in her eyes,
and scurried off preparing for Kuan Yin's coming.

She took out all her money from a rusty biscuit tin,
and bought a coffin.
Then she sat there beside her coffin in her tehement house,
which is where she shared with other old people,
and waited for the grand arrival of Guan Yin.

To everyone's surprise,
Mary didn't die.
In fact on the day that Guan Yin is supposed to come,
it is said that a strange, beautiful flower bloomed on a piece of waste land behind Mary's house. She claimed that this flower was a sign from heaven from her,
to continue to live on Earth and do good deeds.

After this incident,
Mary was able to perform miracles by curing the sick.
Seeing the grateful devotees filling up the rusty biscuit tin with tokens of appreciation,
Mary felt happy at last.

SHORT COMMENTARY ON POEM 3

The theme of this poem is that in one lifespan, one must take adversity in good stride as life is not always a bed of roses. When times & things are bad, I think we should always look at the bright side as there is always a reason for everything that happen and only God will know the answer. As such, we should appreciate life, live life to the fullest and pray for God's blessings. The theme was developed so as to show that the old lady was suffering from loneliness, being poor and feeling helpless and how she finally turn to God for peace of mind and blessing and finally, with her sincere prayer, God had finally answer her prayers by appearing in her dreams. The effect I would like to achieve is to hope all readers will feel merciful to those in dire straits and will move their heart to help those unfortunate in need of help. I believe this poem is successful as it was able to motivate others to help those in need.
